As the sun rises high in our southern sky today, the temps will too.

The mercury is projected to peek at 80, the heavens will be clear of clouds, and it will feel fine.

It’s February. So to have all this warmth and rosiness here in a winter month, it delights me much. There’s a tightness, and a stress, and a clamminess that creeps in on me when it’s consistently cold, and it makes me blue. So, these southern winters have been a blessing the past few years.

Just yesterday, as the temps galloped around in the 70’s, we found ourselves looking up, and listening in, and opening bird pamphlets… researching the winged singers that were performing and playing out back in our pines.

As the two oldest fought over the binoculars, I watched a sweet yellow-tailed sparrow hop branches. He and his mate were out for the day, and telling us about it.

We left the back window open for the rest of our daylight hours, to let all that nature float in. We could all use a bit more nature, I think.

Thursdays are always full and ticking here.

I usually make a crack of dawn grocery run, administer spelling tests, facilitate all the other school subjects, and clean. If I don’t designate a day to scrub a little deeper than the surface, our small rented abode here would succumb to major mess. All the other days I maintenance clean, but for a few serious hours on Thursdays – we scour.

After all the edibles are placed in the pantry, and all the lessons have been learned, and all the crannies have been cleaned –  I prepare for our Friday Sabbath by collapsing at day’s end. It’s maybe not all that dramatic, but on any given Thursday eve – I’m spent and ready for rest.

Tonight, my collapse will have to be postponed a bit, because on top of all my Thursday doings, I have to make myself somewhat presentable for an event of sorts. I might be a bit bedraggled by that time, but I’m trusting it will end up being a blessing to me – getting outside these walls for a bit.

I better slip on shoes, purse my list, and make my way to the grocery.

Lord, thank you for the routine things we get to apply ourselves to today. Let us not lose sight of the blessing, and teaching, and molding that the mundane may offer. Meet us here in the ordinary moments. Let us stumble into faith and wonder. Allow the perceived humdrum to ring in something sweet and needed before day’s end. Yes and amen.
