The sky was blue and dreamy, and the wind was warm and sweet, and the forever reaching firs stood firm and fine above us as we made our way to waterfalls.

We wound high to roaring beauty up that hill in Oregon… the pathway somewhat steep, the experience foreign to a flatland living woman, the postcard outlook inspiring awe , the silence of the climbers using all their air to steam up the side of that peak… it allowed my mind a moment to return to Him.

I’d been stealing short stints here and there to take in the Psalms prior to our trip, particularly Psalm 24: 4-6.

He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.

He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

And wouldn’t you know, in some wild grace, even in those flitting moments of study, the words stuck.

Because they were scribbled on my heart, my mind was able to ponder them without the papyrus being before me, and I was able to pray through them as I climbed skyward.

It ended up being one of my favorite memories from the trip.

There’s something about working the body for a purpose while engaging the mind in prayer.

Something gets worked within.

Lord, give me clean hands and a pure heart. Help me to not lift my soul to what is false and won’t satisfy and isn’t really true, help me to not think or speak deceitfully. Allow me to receive blessing from Your hand. Make me righteous. Let me seek you continually and find Your face as I do so.

Communing with God while climbing, ministers.

Most of us aren’t out frolicking in forests today. I myself am situated in a suburban plane, grinding it out with all the others –  but even in that daily rote we can step through each duty and charge with a mind that turns to His scripts every few strides. And then turning those words into breath prayers… this is what will put power into our seasons and circumstance.

Even our fast and fleeting walks through the Word reap much. What you take in there will weave it’s way into your wounds and holes and whispers. And it will leave you better in all you do.

Never underestimate the power of time, no matter how pithy, spent studying, seeking, and connecting with Jesus.

It only rings in the good.

This was our first Wednesday in the Word. Back tomorrow, Lord willing, for a Thursday posting. To understand what we’re up to here this month, take a look at this post. Big, warm hugs to you all.
